Wine School of Conegliano and Museo Manzoni
In Conegliano there is the GB Cerletti Wine School, the oldest in Italy, established in 1876. The first director was Cerletti who with Antonio Carpenè participated in the campaign for the establishment of Italian Wine Schools.
The spectacular Magna main hall of the School, decorated by Antonio Maria Morera (1888-1964), the viticulture department with the tasting room, the science department, the Bottega del Vino, the original building that rises to the left of the school are all definitely worth a visit. Inaugurated in 1927, the school cellar is used both for the vinification of the grapes, produced in the vineyards of the school and for didactics.
The school is still a place of training, experimentation and promotion of the enological activity and culture of the territory. On the campus there is the Professional Institute for Agriculture, the Agricultural Technical Institute (the current name of the school is “State Institute of Upper Secondary Education GB Cerletti”), the ITS (Higher Technical Institute for new technologies for the Made in Italy Agro-food and wine sector), the University of Padua (for the degree in Viticultural and Oenological Science and Technology), the Regional Center for Viticulture, Oenology and Grappa.
In 2016 the Manzoni Museum was inaugurated, on the first floor of the School.
The museum is a tribute to the figure of the principal prof. Luigi Manzoni (1888-1968), researcher and experimenter of national and international acclaim. The museum tour allows the visitor to discover the professors work, through the rich and varied heritage of scientific materials, instrumentation, publications and places of the institute where he carried out his daily research.
Manzoni Museum
The Luigi Manzoni Museum is dedicated to the illustrious scientist, first professor and then principal of the Conegliano Wine School, who, thanks to his research in the field of oenology and genetics, became famous for having created the renowned wines that still bear his name. The famous Manzoni Crosses (among which we recall the White 6.0.13, fruit of the crossing of Riesling Ramato and Pinot Bianco) were born in order to create more resistant vineyards, without having to forfeit the characteristics of a great wine.
Inside the museum rooms, it’s possible to take a journey through his life’s achievements, admiring the tools he himself created and used during his research, such as botanical and scientific collections, cameras and microscopes from the early 1900s, original slides, historical documents and manuscripts. The professor, aware of the limitations of the drawings used up to that time for botanical documentation, planned to combine photography with science, thus creating a more advanced and suitable instrument for his studies; a leap forward for the naturalistic studies of the time, which, combined with those of viticultural genetics, led to the fulfillment of the objective pursued by the professor: seeing achieved new crossings.
