Marroni di Combai and del Monfenera
Typically autumnal fruit, up to a not very distant past in the Upper Veneto region, it was considered a very precious gift of nature because it could feed in the harshest winters, was preserved for a long time, lent itself to many recipes and even was used as a bargaining chip. The woods were kept clean just waiting for its fall, and the harvest was one of the most lively and cheerful moments of the mountain communities. The Marroni have a heart shape, a light brown striped skin, sweet pulp and an easy to remove skin because it does not penetrate the pulp. On a nutritional level, they are rich in fiber. They contain phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sodium and calcium, as well as vitamins, in particular those of group B, which contribute to the correct functioning of the nervous system, the immune system and the cardiovascular system. The chestnuts are also rich in carbohydrates that are more digestible than those in cereals, and therefore represent a reasonable source of energy. They are a particularly suitable food for those who practice sports, since they favor the work of the muscles and stimulate blood circulation, but they are also indicated for those who have to face a convalescence or who have problems with chronic fatigue and anemia. The Marca Trevigiana boasts two production areas, the Marroni di Combai IGP and the Marroni del Monfenera IGP. The Pro Loco of Combai organizes, in the second half of October, a famous event of promotion and tasting of brown, as caldarrosta and in its endless transformative foods (sweets, creams, soups, ice cream, beer..) deriving mostly from local tradition. It is the Festa dei Marroni di Combai. The brown of Combai, toasted in the rostidora, is easily peeled, eaten quite willingly for the delicious taste and goes well with Prosecco and Verdiso novello. The Monfenera is the mountain on which the chestnut cultivation of the foothills, the heart of the Pederobba chestnuts, grew and developed. Every year in October we celebrate what for the whole Pederobbese community has become the event, a whole month of celebrations and cultural events with the Monfenera brown in the middle; the Market Show of the Browns of the Monfenera, promotes the cultivation of the chestnut, for the improvement of the environment and the woods, and to enhance the fruits and the numerous derivative products. Autumn Delights is an exhibition that takes place in the Treviso area from September to the beginning of December, the ideal time to taste the typical products of this season on site, where the leading role is covered precisely by the Marroni .
