Visits to the Jewish Cemetery
Stood in 1545 on the hill called “Cabalan“, the Jewish Cemetery is one of the most evocative and panoramic places in Conegliano. The cemetery area of Viale Gorizia was practiced until around 1882-84 and it includes over 100 graves belonging to families of Conegliano and Ceneda, each identified by a symbolic coat-of-arms. Among these, there is also the grave of the Coneian or Conian family, that had among its descendants Emanuele Conegliano, known by the name Lorenzo da Ponte, who was Mozart’s librettist.
The gravestones, in sandstone or limestone, are structured and decorated with foliated cartouche, with false columns or in a squared way and they are oriented mainly towards the east, Jerusalem.
The Cemetery opens to the public every first Sunday of the month, offering the possibility of organizing guided tours.
There are two entrances: the first one from 10.00 a.m. and the second one from 11.00 a.m.
A contribution of € 3.00 per person is required; whereas reservations are not required.
In case of bad weather, the appointment is postponed to the following month.
