Castelfranco Veneto
Castelfranco is famous for being the birthplace of Giorgione (1478-1510), one of the most extraordinary and enigmatic figures in the history of Italian painting, of which he holds two precious works – the altarpiece of the Duomo and the frescoed frieze in the house that today is the evocative Giorgione Museum. The city, however, deserves a visit also for other reasons: Piazza Giorgione overlooked by Renaissance buildings, the perfectly preserved walls, the beautiful Academic Theater designed by FM Preti in the XVIII century and by the same author, the Cathedral of San Liberale; in the sacristy there are precious paintings, including frescoes by Paolo Veronese – from the demolished Villa Soranzo – and other paintings by Jacopo Bassano, Palma il Giovane and Paolo Piazza. Built outside the city walls, Villa Revedin Bolasco is also worth a visit, built between 1852 and 1865 to a design by the architect Giambattista Meduna, whose picturesque English park can be visited.
