Treviso
Known as the Little Venice or the Urbs Picta (painted city), Treviso is a city that enchants the visitor for the blue of its waters, the green of its gardens, the red of the bricks of medieval houses. Walking through the characteristic streets of the city, embellished by numerous wall frescos, it will be possible to admire the fourteenth-century church of St. Nicolò, which preserves admirable works including a Renaissance altarpiece by Savoldo, the Chapter Hall of the Dominicans, frescoed in 1352 by the extraordinary Tomaso da Modena (admission fee); unmissable are also the Annunciation by Tiziano, preserved in the Cathedral, and the evocative church of San Francesco, rich in works of art and funerary monuments of Dante’s son and Petrarch’s daughter. The characteristic Pescheria, the romantic Buranelli and the whole area of the canals, the Palazzo dei Trecento, symbol of the secular independence of the urban center, the lively Piazza dei Signori, the Calmaggiore flanked by beautiful porticoed palaces, the goliardic Fontana delle Tette will leave in the visitor an indelible memory of this town that rightly symbolizes the “Marca Gioiosa”. In special events or by appointment it is also possible to visit the Sala dei Rettori in the Monte di Pietà, located near the Jewish ghetto of via Portigo oscuro. Very interesting are also the main museums of the city:
- the Museum of Santa Caterina which, in addition to being placed inside the ancient convent of the richly decorated Servites, preserves a beautiful cycle of frescoes from the mid-1300s by Tomaso da Modena and the Innocenti chapel frescoed in the mid-14th century. This rich museum has several sections in which works and historical testimonies are exhibited, ranging from the prehistoric period to the 18th century.
- the Bailo Museum, recently renovated, which became the exhibition venue of the prestigious permanent collection of modern art, whose fulcrum is the collection of works by Arturo Martini and Gino Rossi.
- the Salce Collection National Museum which, in rotation, displays advertising posters of the vast collection created by Nando Salce (1878 – 1962) and temporary exhibitions of a monographic or thematic nature.
